When life is big, bright, and popping with color all around, you’ve just turned onto Medium Street. There is nothing small-format about some events. They beg for the level of immediacy and rich detail that medium format street photography provides.
Chicago´s summer festivals are big, but Chicago Pride is big, beautiful, joyful and accepting. It´s an event that says “We´re here! There´s joy in being here!”. What an amazing place for street photographers! You are walking inside a rainbow kaleidoscope of color, costumes, dress, undress and people free to be who they are. There is acceptance all around, even extending to a small photographer with a big camera.
Medium format street photography honors that acceptance. It’s all out there. Are you big enough to capture it? Can you honor the LGBTQIA+ community with photos that are big enough to show viewers what they feel? To share their humanity in those photos?
Not everyone comes to accept parts of Medium Street. But immediate, immersive street photography is the holy grail of the street photographer. Medium format brings out stronger reactions, most positive, some less so. But everyone is engaged, and that´s important, because it´s only with engagement comes discussion, and understanding becomes a possibility, now or down the road on Medium Street.
